"Love Your Heart Week" - Cardio Drumming - Free Class/Demonstration

Location: Petoskey Friendship Center - Senior Center on 1322 Anderson Road, Petoskey, MI. Phone: 231.347.3211.

Come and watch— or better yet — participate! in Drum Aerobics. It is a truly fun way to get a good cardio workout. This free class is being offered as part of the Friendship Center’s “Love Your Heart Week.”

This turned out to be a lot of fun.. The challenge was to get the equipment over to the Friendship Center during the blowing wind and snow. How about the hearty Northern souls who braved the blizzard weather on this lovely day in February?! There were some special moments during the one hour session. Different people traded off stations. Many were amazed at what a good workout they were getting while having so much fun.

New Year's Kick-off Drum Aerobic Class ! Tuesday & Thursdays 7:30 pm starting January 15th

Here we are into Week 3 of the Winter Drum Blast Class and we got stopped in our winter-y tracks — first cancellation of our class due to weather tonight, Thursday, Jan. 31st. The NCMC Campus is CLOSED today due to weather. We will provide a makeup class at the end of this session. So, stay in, stay warm, but most of all stay safe.

Week Two of Drum Aerobics - is a Blast. Talk about Getting Warmed-Up in the Winter Storm last night! Not only did our hearts and minds warm up, our bodies did too! Want to get a good workout in this winter blast? Come on down and join us. Drop-ins are welcome! The new Winter drop-in cost is just $10 per session. And special student discount rate of $5 per session. Keeping it WARM in the Winter time!

We had a fun, energetic blast of a Drum Aerobics class last night at North Central Michigan College (NCMC). It was even more fun than the previous classes at NCMC since we are now positioned on the main floor gymnasium. Why is that even better? Because there is more room to spread out and we could see our fun spill over to the observing faces above us on the walking track. Every one present was drumming to some great music and working up a sweat during these cold days and nights in January in Petoskey!

Come join us! Drop-in and different payment plans are available. We meet every Tuesday and Thursday for six weeks. But you can jump in any time and/or come to the nights that work best for you. Call 1 (231) 439-6370 to reserve your spot!.

Drum Circle Series at Independent Village - November 2018

Thursdays at 10:15 am - 11:00 am on the first floor of Independence Village in Petoskey during the month of November. November 8th was the kick-off for the Drum Circle series and begun with 22 residents participating on that day. On this first day, a woman asked to play one of the big African drums during the session. She stood and played the largest of the djun-djun drums with drum sticks for quite awhile before sitting and continued to play the middle sized djun-djun. After the session I am told that she was 100 years old. Yes!

Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Petoskey- Drum Workshop

“Drumming as a Human Extension of Energetic and Vibrational Experience”

September 9, 2018

A wonderful experience was had this morning with approximately 15 people in attendance. After an introduction of those who gathered, along with an introduction of each drum and percussive instrument, the group was encouraged to participate with group drumming as a ‘energetic and vibrational experience.’ Lynn was additionally touched by the group’s activity when one of the participants surprised her with a gift from his own possession - a beautiful painted clave set (percussive instrument) from Cuba.

All are welcome to join this informational and experiential drum workshop.  Lynn Turner will provide an introduction to drums, drumming, drum etiquette, and some of the culture of drumming.  After the introduction all will be encouraged to participate in a facilitated rhythm activity then followed by an "open jam" where the group creates its own percussive song.  The session will end with a short meditation lead by a soft percussive heartbeat.

The congregation meets at the Chapel of Our Guardian Angels
812 Petoskey St
(corner of Fulton and Petoskey Streets)
Petoskey, Michigan

Not just one drum circle at this event, but two! One per day, at the end of the music roster for the Midway Stage.

Another great time was had with the Festival goers. This time we are bathing in the summertime right down by the water in downtown Petoskey. People of all ages had fun out on the lawn with our special buckets — note that function both as a drum chair and as a drum!

This is year two at the Cheboygan Farmer’s Market. The young one steal the show, but the older ones are as much in the groove!

Located at the Festival Square Pavilion on Main Street in Cheboygan's thriving downtown area.  Come on down and join us.  No experience necessary.  Some percussion instruments will be available, but you are encouraged to bring an instrument or something to bang on.  Look around... almost anything can be a drum! . Let's help 'drum' up more business for the farmers at the market!

Camp Transition Zone - Camp Daggett

Northern Michigan Drum Village – presented two drum circles

1)      First night:  Tuesday, August 14, 2018

2)      Second night:  Wednesday, August 15, 2018

Both evenings were scheduled to begin at 8:00 pm and to last approximately one hour.  The activity lasted at least an hour each night.

There were approximately 22 campers, 7 counselors, a number of State of Michigan staff, and some volunteers present for this event.

The drum circle was held at the firepit that had built-in tiers of benches in a semicircle around a fire ring.  The seating faced Walloon Lake which was just a few steps away from the fire pit location.

Roughly 40 people assembled to participate in the first drum circle.  Volunteers and staff helped to unload a van load of drums and percussive equipment to gather at the circle.

Lynn Turner, Executive Director, Northern Michigan Drum Village, facilitated the drum circle.  She began by introducing each of the different types of drums and percussion sounds that she had brought.  As she introduced the names and sounds of the instruments she noted that during the second part of the drum circle, everyone was welcome to try out different types of instruments.

The drum circle was conducted into two different parts.  The first part was a facilitated activity where participants would individually make a rhythm and the group would play it back.  A ‘call and response’ type of activity.  Also, during the facilitated phase, an African polyrhythm was introduced where different rhythms were played at the same time to create a tradition rhythmic song.  The intention of the facilitated phase is to engage participants to listen to each other’s patterns while feeling free to express their own.

During the second phase, an “open jam” was created where everyone played whatever came to them and are encouraged to keep their instrument if they are enjoying it or try a different one.  Eventually, the group clicked into their own unique song.

Lynn brought traditional African drums:  djembe, dununba, sangbans.  Brazilian shakers and homemade shakers.  Street drums (aka 5-gallon buckets) with drumsticks, and a rain stick.

During the first night the group initially had great fun making noise as loud as they wanted on so many buckets and sticks.  Then they settled down and were quite interested in the ‘call and response’ as it went to each person around the circle.  All participants were told to say “pass” if they didn’t want to participate at that moment and it was noted that it would be respected.  Only a handful passed during this time.  The “open jam” followed and was quite loud at times then had a rippling effect.  Then it was followed by certain participants who gathered together to create a certain sound.  Some stopped and were content to listen, but most continued to make a group sound.

Something was engaged and released during that first session since it opened up a whole different experience the second night.  The facilitator began the second circle by asking the group what they thought or felt about the previous night.  The first person who spoke noted how he felt good about hearing about the African drums and also how good they sounded.  Some campers enjoyed the ‘call and response’ time quite a bit, and some enjoyed the ‘open jam’.  They all stated they enjoyed the experience.

But something unique and precious happened the second night.  One of the counselors brought his African djembe and introduced a traditional African song to the group.  Another counselor was from South Africa (!) and joined him as they sung and drummed to a traditional South African song.  Another counselor brought a piece of plywood so he could tap dance to live drumming!  The facilitator accompanied these spontaneous performances on her African dunduns drums as the rest of the group used shakers or bucket drums for an outstanding event.

A wonderful group gathered the night of August 11th at the Hoover Building on fabulous Bois Blanc Island.  Approximately 19 people were on hand for drum joy.  The group included musicians from as far away as Colorado to the youngest drummer from next door.  Several advanced musical professors along with non-musicians made up the composition of the circle that engaged with playful group patterns and a group jam.

Drum Workshop - Snowflake Church Camp - Bellaire, MI

An introduction to drumming will be hosted by The Little White Church in the Woods (aka Camp Snowflake).  The program has two parts.  The first part is from 9:00 am - 10:30 am.  During that time facilitator Lynn Turner will introduce some of the different types of drums, why people drum, documentation of health benefits of drumming, drum etiquette, and some of the different cultural types of drumming.  Then there will a half hour break.  The second part of the program is from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm.  During the second part participants will experience drumming in a drum circle and explore different percussive instruments in a fun, engaging facilitated drum circle.

This event is open to the wider community.  Call Snowflake Camp at 231.735.7507 for details and directions.

During the event, 15 participants added their unique pulse to the group collective.  And they added their creative rhythmic additions as well.  In the picture below note the cowbell being held out on a drumstick for a neighboring drummer.  This helped this young drummer complete her ad hoc drum kit of several buckets and cowbell that served as a symbol.   Also note the coffee can use that provided a solid drum beat.  As we noted before the coffee can was donated to the group and we were glad that is was regular, not decaffeinated!

The event will be held at Mineral Well Park Shelter along the Bear River.  There is plenty of room for shelter under the pavilion in case of rain.  The location is directly across the street of the front doors of Petoskey City Hall.  So rain or shine, let's celebrate summer!
