Impromptu Djembe Lesson at the July 21st Cheboygan Farmer's Market

While at the market on July 21st to promote the following week’s Community Drum Circle, I just happened by a couple of young entrepreneurs who were quite interested in the drum I had on hand.

As we sat on the bench at the market, donated by the Cheboygan Rotary Club, I shared a couple of basic patterns with them.  They seemed to take to it like a duck does to water.  A couple of natural drummers in our midst.

Blissfest July 13 - 15, 2018

Only at Blissfest can someone drop in for a Drum Aerobic session and end up on the drum kit that just happens to be set up on stage.  None other than the great Jelly Roll Band drummer, Bill Riesenbeck, enhanced our set with his tight groove and magic.  How Blissful was that?!

Even though on Saturday, July 14th it felt like it was 90 degrees at high noon, the class was not wanting to stop.  For those in the Petoskey area who would like to join an on-going drum aerobics class, call the college gym with your contact information and your preference of time and days.  Classes are forming now.

Bois Blanc Island Drum Circle

July 6, 2018  Hoover Building, Bois Blanc Island

A fun group gathered and created some great energy at the Hoover Building Friday night.  Brianna was a first-time African djun-djun player and did GREAT!  She held the back beat for the group throughout the night.  She even added some dancing flare around the djuns!  The youngest (and initially reluctant) participant was about to turn three years old.  He had great shaker action during his moment of participation.  Peggy brought items that could be percussive instruments such as the good old wooden shoe stretcher.  Yes, just about anything can be a drum or percussive instrument, right?  Sure enough and she really rocked on with that.

As I loaded the drums on the boat the next day, a number of people noted that they would have gone but didn't know it was that night.  Well, here is the good news -- there will be another Drum Circle on August 11th on the Island.  Thanks to Kathy Brown, Director of Bois Blanc Island Parks and Recreation Department, for coordinating and organizing the events.
